Wainuiomata Trail Project
Beeline is a short downhill trail that led to the birth of the Wainuiomata Trail Project. Since it was originally built a small extensions have been added to the top and bottom to extend the trail up to the start of Jungle Gymand down to the main entrance.
The track is primarily maintained by members of the Wainuiomata High School mountain bike club so can often have little tweaks made to it.
The ECNZ pylon road is maintained by Hutt City Council for access to the power pylons and other infrastructure located on the hills. It features some pinch climbs and spectacular views over the harbour.
Jungle Gym is the primary uphill track. It is 2.5km long and climbs from the Information sign near the bottom of the Wainuiomata hill road to the entrance at top of the road.
Jungle Gym was designed as an uphill track but it is acceptable to use it as a downhill route as well as there currently isn't easy downhill track.
Jungle Scout is a short track that connects Jungle Gym with the main park entrance at the end of Waiu St. Future plans include creating a return leg of the track for those people not wishing to continue all the way up Jungle Gym.
The track was started with the help of Scouting Hutt Valley during a environment day working bee in 2008 and completed with the assistance on WTP volunteers.
Labyrinth is much more than just a continuation of Jungle Gym. It gets narrower, it gets steeper and it gets twistyer and it passes through some of nicest regenerating bush in the Wellington region.
The track currently finishes short of the Spoonhill track, however work is underway to extend it so the tracks join.
Link is a track that will ultimately connect to the valley on the other side of Spoonhill, but for now it offers a way back to the main entrance of the park from Spoonhill without having to ride around the roads.
Spoonhill Is an existing walking track going from the Parkway playground up to one of the Pylons near the top of the hill. Parts of the upper section are very steep and the track gets very slippery when wet.
Born from Shanes vision for an edurance event in the park there is still plenty to come as more will be added to this track in the coming summer.
The wetland loop is a trail built with funding from Hutt City Council. It is aimed as an introduction to mountain biking one step up from tracks such as the Hutt river trail.
Spoonhill Is an existing walking track to which the WTP has added a more sustainable top section for the Hutt City Council. This new section is called 491.
About 150m down from the pylon the track branches in 2 directions. Take 491 to the left for the moderate all weather track or continue on Spoonhill on the right for the difficult dry weather track. The 2 tracks rejoin each other further down to finish at the Parkway Family Playground.
Snails is the companion downhill track for Jungle Gym, making a loop suitable for those wanting to take the next step up from the wetland loop. The track includes a lot of different features aimed at letting riders learn and develop a wide range of skills needed in mountain biking but still allowing relative novices to ride it without having to walk sections.
At the same time a lot of effort has been put in to making the track fun for experienced riders.
Please note that as of December 2009 the track isn't fully finished and some bits need a bit of touching up which should happen in early 2010.
You can use the online request form if you discover a problem in the park.
