The Wainuiomata Trail Project (WTP) builds and maintains over 55 km of mountain bike tracks in the lush, native bush-covered hills above Waiu Park.

The trails are free to access and cater to riders of all levels, from beginners to shredders.

WTP is a non-profit organization comprised of local mountain bikers and dedicated volunteers. Waiu Park is a joint venture between Hutt City Council and WTP, established to create a world-class park with multi-use tracks. You can support WTP here.

Trails For Everyone

WTP offers a mix of trails to suit all abilities. The park’s geography has a mix of terrain and trails are built to New Zealand’s recognised trail grading system.

Trails take you throughout the park via regenerating native bush, wetlands and beech forest.

Trail wayfinding is present within the park.

Additionally, Trailforks is a great way to navigate our trail network. Trailforks displays trail grades, trail statuses and descriptions of each trail.

Getting Started
Easy Trails (Grade 1-2)

Families and beginner riders will find a host of trails within the main basin of the park. These short loops are perfect for staying close to the car and building skills.

If you’re feeling more adventurous, the recently added Mohaka Meander trail traverses northeast through the spectacular bush and takes you to Konini Climber giving you access to the top of the park on beginner-grade trails.

There is also a skills loop in the Waiu Park right in front of the carpark to practice Mountain biking skills on purpose-built, man-made features.

Progressing Riders
Intermediate/Advanced Trails (Grade 3-4)

For riders comfortable with a few more technical features in their ride, the park is packed with a wide range of trails that include flow, natural dirt, rocks and roots, berms, jumps and rollers.

From the machine built magic of freewheel, the old school ups and downs of labyrinth, to the flow of natural roots on 491, you’ll find trails to progress your skills or let the brakes off and shred.

Choose from the range of climbing trails that give access to the trail start points from which you can ride back to carpark or settle in and repeat.

The Steeps
Expert Trails (Grade 5-6)

WTP has a strong community of advanced riders that like it steep and technical and our natural terrain and beech forest deliver the goods!

Our Grade 5 hub (found on Towhai Traverse) is the starting point for our main advanced trails and Konini Climber provides the perfect loop for another run. These trails have gained fans from riders throughout the Wellington region and further afield.

These trails are built by a great crew of volunteers and constantly evolve.

Please note trails may close in winter/wet conditions.
